Non-branching tree-decompositions

We prove that if a graph has a tree-decomposition of width at most w, then it has a tree-decomposition of width at most w with certain desirable properties. We will use this result in a subsequent paper to show that every 2-connected graph of large path-width has a minor isomorphic to either a large tree with a vertex attached to every vertex of the tree or a large outerplanar graph.

Tree-like Decompositions of Simply Connected Domains

We show that any simply connected rectifiable domain Ω can be decomposed into Lipschitz crescents using only crosscuts of the domain and using total length bounded by a multiple of the length of ∂Ω. In particular, this gives a new proof of a theorem of Peter Jones that such a domain can be decomposed into Lipschitz disks. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. Tree-like Decompositions and Conformal Maps

Any simply connected rectifiable domain Ω can be decomposed into uniformly chord-arc subdomains using only crosscuts of the domain. We show that such a decomposition allows one to construct a map from Ω to the disk which is close to conformal in a uniformly quasiconformal sense. This answers a question of Stephen Vavasis. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary: 30C35 Secondary: 30C30,...

Direct decompositions of non-algebraic complete lattices

For a given complete lattice L, we investigate whether L can be decomposed as a direct product of directly indecomposable lattices. We prove that this is the case if every element of L is a join of join-irreducible elements and dually, thus extending to non-algebraic lattices a result of L. Libkin. We illustrate this by various examples and counterexamples.
